The brief

We were asked by the Nottingham Trams network, Keolis Nottingham, to build a new improved version of their employee information mobile app, nicknamed EmMA for short which Nottingham Trams use to facilitate communication with their teams.

The new app needed to combine useful and engaging functionality with an easy user experience so that all employees would feel comfortable using it.

The application we created provides news updates, policies, job-specific information such as rotas, a forum, and many other features – helping Keolis Nottingham engage with their employees.

“The overall quality of the App developed is excellent! Laser Red have been a collaborative partner on this project, supporting and guiding us with our vision to take our award winning app to the next level.”

iOS and Android apps

With over 300 employees using a variety of smartphones we needed to deliver the project on both iOS and Android platforms. This meant coding, testing, and working with two different release systems.

For users without a smartphone (still using their trusted 3310) we created a web-based version of the application, allowing them to log in and access the same content within their web browser, on any device.

Although the app spans multiple platforms it is built from a single codebase, allowing us to effectively manage and maintain the app, helping to reduce ongoing costs to the client.

We smashed the results

50% of workforce engaged within first 48 hours of launch

230+ active users per month

“The app has delivered good value for money and the passion of the Laser Red team to deliver on this project has been amazing.”

The admin system

To allow the Trams admin team to easily control the content within the mobile applications we built a web-based admin system, capable of being securely accessible from any web browser. The admin system was built using the PHP Laravel framework.

Future proof

We built the system in a modular fashion allowing us to easily add new functionality and enable or disable each module separately, to match the needs of the client.

Secure functionality

The web-based admin allows the Keolis admin team to send updates and information to the entire workforce in real-time, using push notifications.

As this is an internal company app, it was essential that the data and users be kept secure. The API which provides data to the app is built in PHP using the Laravel framework, it uses the oAuth2 protocol for secure stateless authentication of users.

“The Laser Red team have been very professional and approachable throughout this project. We have built a good working relationship with the team and the project was well managed throughout. I feel the whole team wanted this to be a success.”
