If you’re an avid ‘I’m A Celebrity’ fan you may have noticed the brand new Barclays UK marketing campaign. They’re trying to warn the British public about online fraud and cybercrime, which is a huge risk, especially around this time of year.

The advert opens with a promotional video for this years must have toy called ‘Supercon’. He’s got it all, a realistic sounding jet-pack, a powerful disc-cannon and he’s only £1.99! All of a sudden Supercon starts speaking and says: “You know what, I can’t do this. It’s all rubbish. It’s a scam. If you order me, you get nothing.”

Look for the lock!

It’s important to remember that when shopping online, if the green ‘secure’ padlock isn’t being shown, then the website could be fake and you should avoid it. This is why all businesses need to understand that without an SSL certificate your website will be viewed negatively by your customers.

Earlier this year we wrote an article on the huge security changes that were coming into place with Chrome 62, and it’s these exact points that Barclays UK are screaming out. If a website doesn’t have a valid SSL connection, it’s prone to MITM (man-in-the-middle) attacks.

“We’re committed to helping people, families and businesses move forward with confidence, to make the most of the digital world, and to do so safely.”

It’s great to see a company as large as Barclays take it upon themselves to let the entire country know just how important it is to hold an SSL certificate, as well as highlighting what to look out for on dodgy websites.

And at Christmas, the issue is especially acute – with 1 in 96 of all online transactions being fraudulent during Christmas 2016.

I know what you’re thinking, “These SSL certificates sounds great, but are they really worth it?” Put simply the answer is “ABSOLUTELY!”. You are going to be securing your website and giving your customers the safest experience possible, as well as improving your search engine optimisation at the same time. Did you know that websites without an SSL certificate, which request credit card information receive 23% less traffic?

Google has previously announced that having a secure connection on your website will benefit your search engine rankings. This could be the jumpstart that you need to finally get ahead of your competitor.

But wait, there’s more!
